Deposition or diagenesis? Probing the Ediacaran Shuram excursion in South China by SIMS

چکیده

The Ediacaran Period (ca. 635–541 Ma) witnessed the earliest paleontological evidence for macroscopic animals (i.e., Ediacara biota) and geochemical observations of largest carbon cycle anomaly in Earth history Shuram Excursion, SE). Numerous hypotheses have been proposed origins SE, ranging from primary seawater to syn- or post-depositional diagenesis. Despite intensive theoretical work published past decade, empirical that is strictly based on fundamental petrographic results at micrometer scale still limited. To evaluate depositional compositions diagenetic effects samples we investigated EN3 interval Doushantuo Formation South China via integrated cathodoluminescence (CL), secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS), scanning electron microscope (SEM). Detailed reveal limestone dominated by calcite microspar, with minor but variable amounts disseminated zoned dolomite crystals. former likely formed neomorphism micrite, while latter was result progressive dolomitization. mean values paired SIMS δ13Ccalcite δ13Cdolomite are indistinguishable each sample consistent micro-drilled bulk-powder δ13C values, which interpret represent “background” signals dissolved inorganic (DIC). We also observed μm-scale variability data may reflect a overprint after deposition. Our origin SE provide little hypothesized isotope alteration meteoric mixing-zone diagenesis late burial In light this study, propose indeed represents marine bears close temporal link surface environment.

Stratigraphic Expression of Earth’s Deepest C Excursion in the Wonoka Formation of South Australia

The most negative carbon isotope excursion in Earth history is found in carbonate rocks of the Ediacaran Period (635-541 Ma). Known colloquially as the “Shuram” excursion, workers have long noted its broad concordance with the rise of abundant macro-scale fossils in the rock record, collectively known as the “Ediacaran Biota.” Thus, the Shuram excursion has been interpreted by many in the conte...

Ca and Mg isotope constraints on the origin of Earth ’ s deepest d 13 C excursion

Understanding the extreme carbon isotope excursions found in carbonate rocks of the Ediacaran Period (635–541 Ma), where dC of marine carbonates (dCcarb) reach their minimum ( 12&) for Earth history, is one of the most vexing problems in Precambrian geology. Known colloquially as the ‘Shuram’ excursion, the event has been interpreted by many as a product of a profoundly different Ediacaran carb...

DIAGENESIS AND RESERVOIR QUALITY EVOLUTION OF SHELF-MARGIN SANDSTONES IN PEARL RIVER MOUTH BASIN, SOUTH CHINA SEA

A study of the diagenetic evolution of sandstones from Panyu low-uplift in the Pearl River Mouth Basin was carried out to unravel the controls on shelf margin sandstone reservoir quality. The reservoir rocks, Oligocene volcanic clastic sandstones of the Zhuhai Formation, have a burial depth of 2765 to 3440 m. 70 samples were studied using the granulometric analyses, X-ray diffraction (XRD) anal...
